How to mass unsubscribe in Apple Mail

Apple Mail on iPhone, Mac and iCloud.com shows an unsubscribe banner on list mail. Here is how to use it fast, and how to filter what it cannot stop.

Apple Mail shows an unsubscribe banner at the top of any message that carries the standard List-Unsubscribe header. It works the same on iPhone, iPad, Mac and iCloud.com. What Apple does not have is a single list of all subscriptions, so the fastest approach is a search-driven sweep.

1. The unsubscribe banner

Open a list email.
Look for the grey banner above the message: "This message is from a mailing list. Unsubscribe".
Tap or click Unsubscribe and confirm. Mail sends the request for you.

No banner means the sender did not include the header. Scroll to the footer link instead.

2. Find every list email fast

Because there is no subscriptions page, use search to surface them:

Search unsubscribe. Nearly every marketing email contains the word.
On Mac, use the Categories view (Promotions, Updates, Transactions) in recent macOS versions. Promotions is your hit-list.
On iPhone, tap the category tabs at the top of the inbox when Categories is turned on.

Open each sender once, hit the banner, move on. Ten minutes covers most inboxes.

3. Rules on Mac and iCloud.com

Rules handle the notifications you need but do not want in the inbox.

Mac: Mail, Settings, Rules, Add Rule. iCloud.com: click the gear, then Rules.
Condition: From contains the sender's domain.
Action: Move Message to a folder, or Delete Message.
Rules set on iCloud.com run on the server, so they apply on every device. Rules set in the Mac app only run while that Mac is awake.

Set rules at iCloud.com if your address is an iCloud address. Set them at your provider (Gmail, Outlook) if you read a non-Apple account in Apple Mail, so they run everywhere.

4. Block senders

Tap the sender's name, then Block Contact. In Mac Mail settings under Junk Mail, choose whether blocked mail goes to the bin or just gets marked.

5. Hide My Email for the future

If you pay for iCloud+, use Hide My Email when signing up for anything new. Each site gets its own forwarding address. When one starts spamming, deactivate that address and it is gone for good, no unsubscribe needed.

6. Bulk delete what is already there

On iPhone, tap Edit, then Select All inside a search result, then Bin. On Mac, select a search result, press Command-A, then Delete. Search plus select-all beats scrolling.
